BAA Founder, Dr. Thomas Egan has passed away

Dear BAA Family:

It is with great sadness, I am writing to let the BAA community know of the death of our founder, Dr. Thomas (Doc) Egan, on May 25, 2022. The BAA Board of Directors is heartbroken at the loss of our friend and former leader.

Doc Egan was an extremely well-respected and iconic figure in youth baseball and softball in Montgomery County, as well as a very popular local dentist.

He founded what would later become the Burtonsville Athletic Association in 1972. He served as BAA's president for 30 years, from 1972-2002. With his wife Barbara, and the support from the Burtonsville community, he started and ran the Challenger League which was a league who served youth who were faced with physical and intellectual challenges. Over his tenure, BAA went from 2 teams serving 24 children, to some years having 20 Instructional Teams, 24 Rookie Teams, 24 Pee Wee Teams, 24 Midget Teams and 20 Junior Teams. He alone coached 156 teams over his 46 years as a coach with BAA.

His love for baseball and softball and working with youth brought these sports to several thousand young people over the years. His motivation was to bring joy to the faces of the children playing baseball and softball, and to provide the avenue for them to do so. He emphasized hard work and commitment and encouraged young people to learn these lessons not only for sports, but for what they may encounter in life. Doc believed in the importance of giving back to the community and hoped that all that participated in BAA would share that philosophy and give back to the communities where they lived.

We will miss him greatly but are sincerely grateful for him and for all that he shared with the BAA community. BAA is one of his many legacies, one that he wished to go on for a long time in the future.

Sincerely,

Molly Surden on behalf of the Board of Directors
